The 1984 Offseason
Jordan, Sir Charles, and The Dream are drafted. Plus…THE Clark Kellogg.
1984 Offseason
Heads now turn from the Showtime Lakers championship, to the off-season changes and the 1984 NBA Draft.
The main story: thanks to Indiana’s terrible season, the Blazers (a playoff team last year) were awarded the first overall pick via Indiana from a trade last year. Who was in that trade? I’m not sure! But signs point to them picking Michael Jordan to partner with Clyde Drexler.
Transactions
Jared Antetokounmpo retires at age 36. I presume to spend more time with his sons.
Rules
No notable new rules.
League Changes
The Clippers relocated from San Diego to Los Angeles. I’m sure this will work out great for the Clips and they’ll quickly have just as many fans as the Lakers.
The Kings announced this will be their final season in Kansas City, Missouri. They will move their franchise to Sacramento the following season.
Turner Broadcasting began a relationship with the NBA that continues today when TBS signed a two-year, $20 million deal with the NBA.
1984 NBA DRAFT
Blazers - Akeem Olajuwon
Shocking twist, Blazers select Olajuwon first.
Rockets - Michael Jordan
MJ is going to Houston. I like this city destination more for him that Portland. He’ll be joining reigning ROY Ralph Sampson.
Bullets - John Stockton
Fitting, because he looks like a politician.
Bulls - Oscar Schmidt
This….is a choice for 4th overall. The Bulls selected Oscar Schmidt because…he shoots 3s?? Something to watch. The NBA isn’t for 3s now. He was originally drafted 131st overall in The Sacred Timeline. ONE HUNDRED THIRTY-FIRST!!!
Kings - Charles Barkley
Hope Sir Charles enjoys the KC barbecue before the Kings are sequestered to Sacramento next year.
The Suns end up trading our top pick (13th) and Charles Pittman to Indiana for Kevin McKenna and THE CLARK KELLOGG who is age 23.
“Hell yeah!” - one Phoenix Suns fan.
Let’s head to the 1984-85 Season!
